Retirement of Dr Chris Hilton from the Derwent Valley Medical Practice

May 2023

After much thought I have decided to retire from General Practice and will no longer be a GP in New Norfolk from the 1st July 2023.

I have a large number of people to thank for their generosity since I first came to New Norfolk in September 2001.

Firstly I would like to thank all who have allowed me to look after them over the years. It is a great honour occasionally tinged with sadness, to look after people who ask for help with their health. Most of the heavy lifting is actually done by you and all I am doing is adjusting the sails from time to time. Thank you for trusting me.

Next I would like to thank the great reception team and those behind the scenes. So much is done quietly and without fuss that makes the daily life of a doctor easier. The team has changed over the years but the ethos has remained the same. You make it all possible. A sincere thank you to you all.

And the wonderful nurses … you have coped with my untidiness, messes and terrible jokes without any complaint, as well as the ongoing important work that you do in your own professional role. Again, so many invaluable tasks are done behind the scenes and the occasional quiet suggestion when required has kept me on the straight and narrow.

To my medical colleagues over the years, I have received so much kind support and at times useful advice [ yes, doctors definitely need advice at times too! ]. It has been wonderful to see the medical team enlarged over the last few years with many younger [ to me ] faces, and you all know so much!

I am particularly grateful to Martin Neuberger who has been around seemingly for ever. Also to Gonzalo De Angelo and Lester Pepingco who are doing such a great job improving the medical centre and making it a respectful workplace that training doctors aspire to come to.

I will miss you all very much but have a busy schedule of things planned to hopefully keep me reasonably well and active for a few years yet. You may see me about In the Derwent Valley from time to time but this time with a fishing rod instead of a stethoscope…

Sincerely,
Dr Chris Hilton
