Personalised pessary care and prolapse management

Pessary Care for Pelvic Organ Prolapse

We offer comprehensive pessary services for the management of pelvic organ prolapse, providing a non-surgical option to help relieve symptoms and improve your day-to-day life.

What is a pessary?

A pessary is a small, removable device that sits inside the vagina to support the pelvic organs (such as the bladder, uterus, or rectum).

It can help ease symptoms like:

  • A feeling of heaviness or dragging
  • A vaginal bulge
  • Discomfort with movement or exercise

Pessaries are a safe and effective option for many women and can be used short- or long-term.

Types of pessaries

There are a range of different pessaries, and we’ll work with you to find one that feels right.

Some common types include:

  • Ring pessary – soft, flexible, and the most commonly used option. Many women can remove and reinsert it themselves.
  • Ring with support – similar to a ring but with extra support.
  • Cube pessary – offers a firmer hold if more support is needed. It is usually removed daily.
  • Gellhorn pessary – used for more advanced prolapse and usually managed with GP support
  • Other specialised pessaries – There are additional shapes and designs that may be recommended depending on individual needs.

It’s very normal to try a couple of sizes/options before finding the best fit and we will guide you through the process.

FAQs

Will I feel the pessary?
Most people don’t notice it once it’s in place. If it feels uncomfortable, we can adjust the size or type.

Can I remove it myself?
Many women can, especially with ring pessaries. We’ll show you how if this is something you’d like to do.

How often does it need to be checked?
This varies depending on the type of pessary and your preference. Some women manage it themselves, while others come in for regular check-ups every 3-6 months.

Can I still be active or exercise?
Yes, pessaries are designed to support you during everyday activities, including exercise.

Is it okay to have sex with a pessary?
With some types (like ring pessaries), yes. Others may need to be removed beforehand, and we’ll talk you through what to expect.
